The young soldier is tromping heavily through the muck. The wet clay sticks to his feet as he and the rest of his battalion approach the very rear of the front line. They can hear to battle raging, and excitement fills their veins as they draw nearer. The private begins to look around himself wildly. He stops dead in his tracks, and the column behind him begins to run into one another like a giant slinky. Confusion breaks out, and the whole battalion is quickly in an uproar as the column behind the rooted soldier begins to break up and cause havoc in the adjacent columns.
A sergeant rushes up to the young private and shouts the question of “Why?” in his face. The soldier begins whimpering about how he doesn’t really like the sergeant’s attitude about it all. He doesn’t really enjoy soldiering and he certainly doesn’t like the fact that his feet may get wet. He doesn’t like carrying the sixty-pound pack , and he surely wouldn’t want to confront the enemy since he has many friends over there.
Then
the private complains about how the other soldiers don’t treat him nicely.
The men behind him got a considerable amount of mud on his back this
excursion, and that was most obviously not just an accident…No, they were
intentionally flinging mud on the poor young private’s back.
Why couldn’t he be at the front of the column rather than his
assigned place anyway? Then there
were the other soldiers who the young man had caught breaking the rules and
seeing a movie a couple of days ago. How
could these men be trusted? The
sergeant learns in only a moment that no one in the battalion meets the young
private’s standards, they are all against him, and the young man doesn’t
think the battalion should be going in this direction anyway.
Tomorrow was supposed to be sunny.
Why not wait ‘till tomorrow to march to the front in dry conditions?
A look of disgust flashes across the sergeant’s face as he deliberately removes his M1911A pistol from his holster and takes aim at the young private’s temple. “Young man!” the sergeant shouts. “If you are not for me, then you are against me! If you say you are a soldier in this army and you do not act like it, then you are a liar…deceiving even your own self. Young man…faith without works is dead!”
