Matthew 22:34-40
"But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. 35Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."
Society today, as always, follows the lead of the church. The church too often disobeys and discards Jesus' explicit instructions in Matthew 22 and practices a modern, hateful witchcraft. As Christians stand in the face of depravity and call sin exactly that...sin, we too often come under attack not from without the church but from within. The modern redefinition of Godly love as a universal tolerance of, acceptance of, and condoning of sin is really hatred disguised as love.
What should be the church's approach to homosexuals? I think all Christians would (or should) say that we have a duty before God to love them, but the question becomes -- what does that look like? In many churches today, loving of the homosexual involves gently holding their hand and stroking it softly as we coo in their ear telling them that everything is ok. Love too often is associated with being nice, gentle and soft. We don't want to draw lines of upset the poor person.
What should love look like? If we truly are Christians and if we truly believe the scripture, then we have a duty to point out sin in the world and call it sin. We have a duty to step forward and proclaim that the God of Heaven and Earth demands repentance. We have a duty to point out that there is hope in this hopeless world, but it is found only in repentance and submission to the Almighty.
If we truly believe scripture and we know that unrepentant sinners (many sins listed in Galatians 5) will not see the kingdom of God, is it loving to lie to the poor sinner thereby attempt to damn them to Hell or is it loving to press upon them the gravity of the situation?
You see, the church today too often expresses what it calls love as a big, pink, fuzzy wuzzy, gentle softness, but as we dig past all the fuzz and see what is underneath it is a hateful selfishness. The inner core of the big fuzzy is a black, horrid glob of love for the world. It is a want to be respected by those who hate God. We like to be liked even by those at war with God.
Let us love our neighbors. Let us love sinners. This means we tell them the truth. We point out the evils of sin, we show the one and only true hope...Jesus Christ.
